| National Internet Backbone
expected by year-end The high speed National Internet backbone is expected to be in place by the end of the year, said top Department of Telecommunications (DoT) officials. DoT has already announced its ambitious plans to set up a National backbone for Internet services, which will cover all parts of the country. "This backbone, to start with, will have a capacity of 8 Mbps and will go up to 155 Mbps by the year 2000. Besides, the backbone will have 6 nodes with international connectivity at 34 Mbps," said DoT officials. The backbone is proposed to be set up at an estimated cost of Rs 86 crore, which will be funded through internal accruals. The backbone will act as a transmission media to carry the Internet traffic of both government and private ISAPs to the nearest International Gateway. It will also act as a facilitator for ISP to ISP interconnection within the country besides facilitating roaming. "The backbone has also been proposed to have-a three tier structure. The first tier would consist of large stations with high capacity digital trunks with highest level of redundancy. Type B and C nodes shall be smaller nodes with lesser access requirements," official elaborated. In additional, DoT has also proposed to have Remote Access Server, to serve Internet dial up subscribers in 45 locations consisting of 14 type A nodes and 31 Type B nodes in the first phase for which he tenders have been floated. This Internet backbone is expected to serve about one million subscribers by the year 2000. Source : Express Computer |

Some executives fear the virus, which is dubbed Melissa and which preys on Microsoft Corp's Word software, could tie up traffic on the Internet on Monday if it is unstopped. The virus enters a computer in an e mail message labeled "Important message From", which also includes the apparent sender's name. Melissa replicates itself when a computer user opens the email and a Word based attatchment it contains. Once open and active, the virus sends infected e-mail to 50 new recipients it finds in the computer owners address book. Source : Economic times |
