India's two group of tropical islands lie off the peninsula's southern coasts: to the west of Kerala, the islands of
Lakshadweep and to the east, far out in the Bay of Bengal, the archipelago of
the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Not all of the Lakshadweep group are
inhabited, some are mere dots in the ocean. The Andamans have for centuries
been home to various indigenous tribes. Now the towns have grown and the
tourist industry has recognized the potential of the tropical paradise, with its
white beaches, unpolluted water and surrounding coral reefs that are so tempting
to divers and snorkellers. Havelock Island, reached by ferry from the capital,
Port Blair, has a few fishing villages on the mangrove-strewn shores and some
quiet accommodation for visitors looking for peace and relaxation.
